Madelyn Detloff photoWelcome from the Director
(February 2009)

Dear Friends:

Welcome to our third century!

On February 17, Miami University celebrated its 200th birthday. For the remainder of 2009, we as a university community will be invited to events and encouraged to reflect on the meaning of our history and possibilities for our future.

WMS major participating in symposium photoOur 9th Race, Class, Gender, Sexuality symposium on February 13th offered one such opportunity to reflect, deliberate, and dream. The theme of the conference was "Be the Change: Local Interventions in a Global World." Approximately 50 presenters — including several undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, Ron Becker photodistinguished visiting scholars and community organizers —shared their research, lead workshops, and participated in public discussions with over 350 audience members throughout the day. Rebecca Jim, Executive Director of Local Environmental Action Demanded (LEAD) Agency, gave an informative keynote talk on grassroots audience applauding photocommunity efforts to clean the Tar Creek superfund site near the tribal lands of the MiamiNation of Oklahoma. The symposium concluded with an invigorating Town Hall Forum featuring Dr. Mary Jane Berman, Dr. Christine Taylor, Dr. Stefanie Dunning, Dr. Ron Becker, and Kellyn Moran (editor of the Miami Student). Many thanks to our co-sponsors, the Center for American and World Cultures and the Black World panel applauding photoStudies Program, as well as the Western Program, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Women's Center, the Comparative Religion Department, andthe Association of Jewish Students for their sponsorship of individual speakers.

Four days after the Be the Change symposium, the entire Miami community was invited to attend a Bicentennial Celebration at Millett Hall. The inspiring kick-off celebration included many reminders of Miami's impressive history, as well as calls for us to mobilize our collective energy, imagination, and integrity in order to meet the significant challenges that face us in our third century. During the ceremony, Miami's reputation as the "Cradle of Coaches" was mentioned several times. An avid football fan myself, I'm proud that Miami has been the home of such famous coaches as Bo Schembechler, Sid Gilman, and Paul Brown. I'm even more proud to think of the Miami Women's Studies Program as the "Foundry of Feminists," which, in its comparatively brief history has been home to an all-star cast of feminist philosophers, critics, researchers, theorists, and educators. Famous feminists who have been affiliates of the Women's Studies Program include Iris Marion Young, Allison Jagger, Fran Dolan, Alice Fox, Susan Jarratt, Linda Singer, Susan Kay, Cynthia Enloe, Juliana Schiesari, Kristina Straub, Kelly Oliver, Jane Gallop, Dale Bauer, and Kay Goodman.

Continuing this tradition are our talented core faculty and affiliates, including Susan Morgan (Distinguished Professor of English), Kathy McMahon-Klosterman (Eminent Faculty Scholar for the Office of Community Engagement and Service), Mary Jean Corbett (John W. Steube Professor), Kate Ronald (Roger and Joyce L. Howe Professor of English), and Sheila Croucher (Rejai Professor of Political Science and Professor of American Studies).

As we continue into our third century, I expect the list of eminent scholars, teachers, artists, activists, and entrepreneurs who have graced our program to grow even longer and more distinguished. Indeed, if you have a suggestion for adding members to our unofficial "Foundry of Feminists" honor roll, or just want to chat about the program, please contact me at detlofmm@muohio.edu.

Sincerely,

Madelyn Detloff
