Why Women's Studies?

Women's Studies graduates gain knowledge, self-awareness, and breadth of perspective which are valuable in their own right and which public service organizations, private industry, government, and graduate schools seek.

And the employment picture is encouraging: comparisons of Women's Studies graduates with female college graduates nationwide show an edge for Women's Studies in both traditional and non-traditional career fields.

Women's Studies Program at Miami University

(Fall 2008)

Dear Friends:

This is an exciting time of transition and growth for Women's Studies!

We are pleased to welcome two new members to our core faculty:

Fauzia Ahmed photoDr. Fauzia Ahmed (joint appointment with Sociology and Gerontology) specializes in gender and globalization, with expertise in microcredit movements, Muslim masculinities, and issues facing South Asian and Muslim women.

Roxanne Ornelas photoDr. Roxanne Ornelas (joint appointment with Geography) specializes in Native American communities and cultures, with emphasis on how spiritual worldviews impact our understanding of policy decisions about land use and water rights.

The addition of both talented faculty members to our ranks strengthens the Women's Studies Program immeasurably, especially in the areas of the social sciences, globalization, environmental justice, and comparative nationalities/ethnicities. For this, we have Dr. Cheryl Johnson to thank for her fine recruiting efforts during her term as Women's Studies director. In a time of hiring freezes, Dr. Johnson was able to increase our core faculty by three exceptional assistant professors — Dr. Yu-Fang Cho, Dr. Ahmed, and Dr. Ornelas. Dr. Johnson is taking a well-deserved respite from administrative work by returning full time to the faculty of the English Department, but she remains a valued affiliate of the program.

Last year, Dr. Mary Frederickson (History) spearheaded a successful attempt to gain membership in the prestigious National Council for Research on Women (NCRW). Even more impressively, Dr. Frederickson authored a successful grant to link our program to a Ford Foundation supported grant from the NCRW which funds three fellowships designed to diversify our faculty and enhance our outreach to communities in the area: The Nellie Craig award (named for the first known African American student at Miami), The Las Mujeres award, and the Miami Tribe award. The first recipient of the Nellie Craig award is Dr. Tammy Kernodle (Music) for her continuing work on African American women's music and performance. Dr. Julie Avril Minich (English) and Juan Carlos Albarran (Latin American Studies) will share the Las Mujeres award. Minich focuses on the intersections of Chicana/queer/disability studies, and Albarran works especially with Latina/o immigrant and refugee communities. The Miami Tribe award goes this year to Dr. Roxanne Ornelas, who will use the fellowship to support her efforts to work closely with the Miami people as she continues her research on Native American communities.

The Women's Studies program also welcomes 17 new faculty affiliates this year: Phyllis Callahan (Zoology), Moira Casey (MUM English), Vitaly Chernetsky (GREAL), Amanda Diekman (Psychology), Stefanie Dunning (English), Katherine Durack (English), Paula Gandara (Spanish & Portuguese), Kimberly Hamlin (American Studies), Paul Jackson (Theatre), Kelli Johnson (MUH English), Theresa Kulbaga (MUH English), Deborah Lyons (Classics), Kim Medley (Geography), Gaile Pohlhaus, Jr. (Philosophy), Lisa Poirier (Comparative Religion), Elise Radina (Family Studies and Social Work), and Ben Sutcliffe (GREAL). We look forward to working with this cohort of new colleagues, and are excited about the potential for growth and renewal they will bring to our program.

Please consult our re-designed website for information on the many events that we are sponsoring, and mark your calendars for our Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality Symposium to be held on February 13th, 2009. Miami faculty, staff, and students are all invited to participate in the symposium. Our focus this year will be on Local Politics in a Global Context. Calls for presentations will be linked to this website later this fall.

Please accept my invitation to become involved in the program, and to contact me with your ideas and insights.

Cordially,
