As we approach the middle of September, Miamians are still just settling into the routines and rhythms of the new academic year. Many first years are still adjusting to life away from home. Returning students are fine-tuning their social calendars and academic plans. Faculty and staff are learning about new students, classes and colleagues. At the same time, we are all still getting to know our new President, our new campus buildings and (not to be overlooked) our wonderful new campus parking options! (If you, too, participate in the Great Oxford Parking Competition each morning, you’re especially excited about the new parking!)
Yet even this early in the year, we in the Honors & Scholars Program office have already turned out attention to planning for the semesters that lie ahead. Kristy Burton, our Associate Director for Enrollment Management, is already hard at work in spreading the word about Honors & Scholars to prospective members of Miami’s Class of 2011. Kari Taylor, our Assistant Director for Academic and Co-Curricular Support, is collaborating closely with colleagues in Residence Life, Student Affairs and other offices to enhance the educational experiences of H&S students in the residence halls and off-campus. Deb Stanley and Katie Egart, meanwhile, are developing a range of new opportunities for H&S students to engage in service learning activities and public service. And on the curricular front, we are wrapping up work on the spring 2007 Honors course schedule and consulting with faculty about future course plans.
This is truly an exciting time for the Honors & Scholars community! And as we work to chart the future of the Program, we need your help! Give us your thoughts about the strengths of the H&S program and where we need to improve. Give us your ideas about how we can make your experience as an H&S student a more fulfilling and meaningful one. Tell us about your experiences while at Miami in pursuit of scholarship, leadership and service. We want to hear what you have to say! As members of the Honors and Scholars community, we all have a stake in the success of the Program both now and in the future. Please join us in working to make the Honors & Scholars experience the best that it can be.
