This Week in Honors

When I started at Miami, I thought that being an Honors student meant little more than receiving a scholarship. It would take me four years to realize that it truly means you are part of a larger community. The Honors Program has proven to be an integral part of my time here at Miami. It has provided challenging classes, lasting friendships and rewarding opportunities.

Honors courses have been some of the most interesting and diverse classes I’ve taken. Topics ranged from health care and constitutional law to physics and philosophy. Honors classes provide a stimulating and innovative way to learn. I entertained ideas and took part in lively class discussions that provided more knowledge and wisdom than I could have ever gained from a textbook. Honors courses expected excellence from their students. I was encouraged to strive for such standards; in doing so I did my very best work and stretched the horizons of my knowledge.

Being part of the Honors & Scholars LLC means more than having a dorm to sleep it – it means being part of some of Miami’s most diverse and talented students. My first days in Tappan Hall, one of the H&S first year LLCs, began friendships that have lasted until this day. I lived with fellow honors students for four years, and as I prepare to move onto law school, I will be living with another Honors Program alum.

Finally, the Honors Program has offered me a range of opportunities I would not have otherwise had. I’ve spoken with Supreme Court Justices, met renowned authors and given my time to those less fortunate than me. But perhaps the greatest opportunity given to me by the program is my job as a Peer Advisor. Having worked with the program for over a year, I’ve had the chance to help guide two groups of entering first years through orientation. I’ve been given latitude and responsibility in my work that will shine as brightly as any professional internship.

The Honors Program has given me benefits that will long outlast the scholarship I received when I entered Miami four years ago. It has provided me a depth of thought and an education of the highest quality, friendships and memories that will last until my dying day, and experiences that will affect and shape me for years to come.
