What surprised me most about college life...
How hard it was to balance work and play. In high school everything is very structured. You go to class straight through the day, go home and eat dinner, do homework or go work out, go to sleep, wake up and do it all over again until Friday. At college there is so much free time, and Friday and Saturday's are no longer the only nights that people want to go out. Freshman year it's hard to balance the two because while it's important to do well in school, you also have these new temptations of "well my friends are going out tonight, I really don't have that much to do tomorrow." Finding the right balance, and not abusing all the new free time you have is key to having a good time in college, but also still keeping your grades.

My Advice for a High School Senior:
"Get involved! First semester freshman year you are very isolated to your dorms. The people from your dorms tend to become your crutch -- you eat with them, go to classes with them, and go out with them. While they become your good friends that you will most likely stay close with until senior year, campus seems so large because you have only exposed yourself to those people. Whether it's Greek life or an organization, do something to get involved. It forces you to get to know other people who otherwise you wouldn't have met, and shrinks campus.” |
