We offer a variety of ways in which our students can make significant contributions to their community and become passionate about serving others including alternative Spring Break Trips that focus on intensive community service, honors courses with a service component, the Earned Income Tax Credit campaign in which students help low-income families file for tax returns, the Honors Advisory Board Charity Auction, and the Urban Leadership Internship Program. | SPOTLIGHT ON PRIYANKA CHANDRASEKARAN |
"In light of my Miami experiences, I have found extraordinary power to surrender into my commitment to achieving excellence in all my endeavors."
MY GOALS:
As I entered Miami, I had a deep calling to excel academically and to take up roles to further my skills as a leader. When I look back at those 3 years which now seem to have passed away in a wink’s time, I feel a great sense of satisfaction as I rejoice my excellence in academics and my involvement with service leadership activities. My experiences both in and outside of the classroom have given me eternal optimism to keep excelling in my endeavors and be a factor of ‘wow’.
MY EXPERIENCES:
Every experience at Miami has a very different flavor to it, and every one of them is valuable to me as they have allowed me to realize my capabilities. One of the most powerful of my Miami experiences is my involvement with "Res life." As a resident assistant and as an orientation leader, I have found the incredible joy of giving rather than taking. These roles have allowed me to learn the importance of surrendering and being a constant role model. The smile that I can put on a resident's face after assuring that their problems will be taken care of or the contentment that I was able to promise to those anxious parents and first year Miami students are priceless moments. The fact that I am able to partake in others' happiness as a leader will always be special to me.
LEARNING THROUGH SERVICE:
Change is the essence of learning and I feel a tremendous change in the way I have started to see and appreciate things. Service leadership opportunities have given me the prowess of intuition and decision making. I have seen a steady growth in my thought process and have set high future goals for myself. Several challenges, both personally and professionally, that have come my way have revealed the best of my abilities and sometimes I am just stunned by the power of an optimistic attitude that I have developed over the years at Miami.
