RESEARCH

Why pursue research? If you are interested in pursuing an advanced degree in graduate or professional school, undergraduate research is essential to make you a competitive candidate for admission. Or, if you're interested in a different path after graduation, pursuing research at the undergraduate level shows commitment to academic excellence, and will differentiate you from other candidates in the job market or professional world. Research is also a great way to contribute to the good of society. By asking questions about existing structures or methods and then generating new knowledge you help to advance society as a whole.

Our program encourages all students to pursue research and provides the necessary support and opportunities to do so. Your Honors advisor can help you make faculty contacts and guide you toward research-oriented activities as early as your first year at Miami. We also offer workshops and programs for Honors students interested in getting involved in research. In addition, we have one of the largest endowments in the nation to support undergraduate research, which yields approximately $60,000 each year to support student initiated research, creative, leadership and service projects. Any Honors student is eligible to apply! Of course, we know that completing an independent project is challenging undertaking, so we have designed our honors courses to prepare students for this task. Honors courses focus on building the skills necessary for you to succeed at your independent endeavors. Ultimately, ALL of our students will conduct some form of research as their final step before graduation. Our students are frequently nationally recognized for their work (our students have won Marshall, Astronaut, Goldwater, Beckman, Fulbright, USA Today Academic Team, Clinton, and Truman scholarships), are published, and also present at national and worldwide conferences.

  • SPOTLIGHT ON KEVIN SHKOLNIK

"My favorite part about Miami was the relationships I fostered with my professors. As I graduate I will definitely keep in touch with many of them as I greatly value their continued support and friendship."

    MY GOALS:
Academically, I was a little unsure about the exact route I wanted to pursue when I first came to Miami. I was very interested in the liberal arts: history, poli sci, philosophy, etc... but wasn't sure how those interests would come together. In my Junior year, I was afforded an incredible opportunity, via the Summer Scholars fellowship, to take on an independent study of American foreign policy. I soon extended my summer research into my honors thesis. This experience combined with the flexibility afforded to me by Miami's Honors Program led me exactly where I hoped to be as I graduate. I am shortly moving to Washington DC and have an internship in at a Non-Proliferation Think Tank and feel extremely fortunate to have been able to take advantage of the vast opportunities that Miami offers.

    MY RESEARCH:
My Honors Thesis research has certainly been the most significant learning experience for me at Miami. I can remember my expectations for the project when I started it and how my entire world view as well as my writing abilities had changed by the end. Subsequently the final product blew away those original expectations. The fact that I was allowed so much independence in the process really gave me the opportunity to put my own signature and style into the final product, and it has turned out to be something that I am very proud of not only for the what it is now but also for the process I undertook to create it. The process of reading, researching, writing, editing, etc... has already proven invaluable, and I feel it has really given me a unique perk as a I apply for future jobs.

    MY MIAMI:
I really grew during my time at Miami, especially in regards to how I look at the world and my place in it. Not only did I gain the confidence to take the next step with authority and willingly compete for what I want but it also allowed me to grow as a friend, student, son and sibling based on the amazing relationships I have developed here. There is certainly a balance at Miami that allows for the best of the academic and social worlds, and it has really led me to step out of my conventional comfort zone and take on new challenges in both realms. Socially, there are few places I can even imagine better than Miami. The campus community is so welcoming, and there is enough diversity that regardless of a student's interest, there are plenty of opportunities as well as other students to explore.
