LEADERSHIP

We are putting words into action. Leadership is more than just a concept or a buzz word in Miami University’s Honors Program. It is something that our students incorporate into their lives every day. Our students learn that leadership encompasses more than just titles and positions; they learn that leadership is personal and can take a variety of different forms.

Honors students lead through excellence in academics, through service to Miami and the surrounding community, and also through more traditional means. With more than 250 student organizations on campus, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved! The Honors Program is striving to build a community of leaders at Miami. We offer numerous programs that focus on leadership, and also offer introductory Honors courses that explore different theories of leadership, and encourage students to reflect on their own roles as leaders within their community. When you graduate from our program, we are confident that you will have the tools necessary to be a leader in any career path you choose.

"Both my curricular and co-curricular experiences during my 4 years at Miami allowed me to focus my passions, articulate these passions, and develop them into tangible goals."

    MY GOALS:
I was a very involved and engaged student in high school, and I hoped to find a similar experience at Miami.  I really wanted to find a few opportunities that I could really invest myself in, broaden my interests and experiences, and develop my leadership skills.  I definitely think I was able to accomplish these goals at Miami! Although I was overwhelmed at the outset of my undergraduate experience by the sheer number of leadership opportunities, it was not difficult to explore them and find those that suited me.  My growth was certainly fostered by the faculty and staff at Miami, as well as by my colleagues.

    BECOMING A LEADER:
When I came to Miami, I had no idea what I wanted to do, or how to achieve or even articulate my professional goals.  Both my curricular and co-curricular experiences during my 4 years allowed me to focus my passions, articulate these passions, and develop them into tangible goals.  I now know what I want to do with my future and how to get there!  I have also grown in developing my personal and moral values at Miami – I am much more confident about who I am than I was 4 years ago. My leadership experience gained in my sorority and as a peer mentor in the Honors Program were significant learning experiences for me.  Both roles allowed me to gain valuable leadership skills, take proactive steps in making change on campus, and develop my skills as a good communicator.

    OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE:
My most significant learning experience was my participation in study abroad. I was pushed far beyond my comfort zones and what I thought was my capacity to learn!  However, this experience reminded me of the value of learning for the sake of learning, engaged me in a completely new discipline, and illustrated the importance of global awareness.  It imparted valuable leadership skills by helping me to gain a new level of confidence in my ability to engage professionally with important officials as well as colleagues, and to travel independently and successfully.  It was overall an incredible learning experience!
