FROM THE DIRECTOR...
I am delighted that you are interested
in learning more about the Miami University's Honors Program. We are
seeking students to join our community who enjoy being challenged
both inside and outside the classroom, who want their college experience
to be transformative, and who thrive in a dynamic learning environment.
Because we know
that transformative learning experiences take place outside of the
traditional classroom, we encourage students to incorporate both
in-class and out-of-class experiences into their educational plans.
Your plans of study can include any of the 100 honors seminars offered
each year. These hands-on seminars focus on a wide range of current
and enduring topics and encourage dynamic interaction between you,
your peers, and your professors. Your plans of study may also involve
courses needed for your major as well as many intensive out-of-class
learning opportunities such as working in a research lab, engaging
in meaningful and intense community service, pursuing professional
internships, co-teaching a course with a faculty member,
or studying at a foreign university. You can create a plan of study
as unique as your personality. You can follow a more traditional
path or choose to navigate completely new learning terrain.
To broaden your
experience, you can live in one of Miami's honors residence halls.
Our halls are beautifully designed and lively places of activity
where students study together; enjoy a wide variety of social, intellectual,
and cultural programs; and form meaningful friendships that often
last a lifetime. Each year, more than 150 activities, events, and
programs are offered in the honors residence halls, making them
one of the most active learning and social sites on our campus.
Because you're
free to pursue intense, unusual, and meaningful activities and projects
outside the traditional classroom walls, we offer you a bedrock
of support, including:
o Annual personalized
advising sessions to plan out your path of study
o Grants, ranging from $100-$1,000 for research, creative, leadership,
and service projects and initiatives
o Opportunity to apply for a one-time tuition waiver during the summer or winter break to prepare you for a semester or year-long study abroad experience
o Special courses to begin a major research project; prepare for
a national fellowship, graduate, or professional school; or engage
in in-depth community service
o Workshops specifically designed for the developing needs of honors
students, such as "Getting Started on Research," "Preparing
Effective Resumes," "Selecting Appropriate Study Abroad
Programs," and "Networking with Honors Alumni"
o E-newsletters to keep you up-to-date on the latest cultural and
intellectual events, internships, and other opportunities
We have witnessed
our students steadily grow into mature scholars and citizens with
a strong set of personal values, an indefatigable work ethic, and
a unquenchable thirst for discovery that prepares them remarkably
well for the challenges in their lives ahead.
I look forward
to receiving your application and hopefully to welcoming you to
our outstanding community next fall.
Sincerely,
Dr. Carolyn
Haynes
