The Honors Program collaborates with the Office of Residence Life to provide living learning communities for first-year and upper-class students in our program. Students in the Honors halls can expect an environment that challenges and supports students in exploring their personal and intellectual goals. Staff and residents in the halls promote an atmosphere that allows students to balance their social and academic life with vibrant student-led programming. Students in the community are often in classes together, which facilitates collaborative studying and learning.

Honors First Year Communities:

Scholarship, Leadership and Service
Currently located in Tappan and Emerson Halls (2007-2008)
Because the transition into college poses some unique challenges for students--even for high-ability students--the H&S Program has a living learning community that is solely devoted to its first-year Honors students. The main aim of this LLC is to help students navigate the college campus environment; identify specific personal and academic goals for college; gain skills in scholarship, leadership, and service; and become responsible for making purposeful choices about their college experience."HON 280T: Introduction to Scholarship, Leadership, and Service" is a special one-credit seminar associated with this community.

"Living in Tappan Hall was one of the best parts of my freshman year. The environment was enriching to my academic and social experience as it provided me with many opportunities to get involved in activities on campus, meet new people, and receive the needed academic advising."

Honors Upper-class Communities:

Scholars for Service:

Currently located in Wells Hall (2007-2008)
Once students complete their first year, they are given the option of living in another Honors living learning community that is specially designed for students in the middle years of their college experience. The aim of the middle-level Honors living learning community is to help students become immersed in their disciplines and gain awareness of the significance of their disciplinary study by applying knowledge to real-world problems and to their own lives. The Second- and Third-Year Living Learning Community also focuses on providing and initiating service projects within the local community. "HON 281: Introduction to Community Service & Learning" is a special two-credit seminar associated with this community

Scholars for Change:
Currently located in Bishop Hall (2007-2008)
Our "capstone" residence hall, which has traditionally been Bishop Hall, is purposefully designed for Honors students completing their years at Miami. This living learning community aims to assist students in navigating this challenging period of transition and to provide them with tools for synthesizing and reflecting on their college experience. It focuses on questions such as: What have I accomplished and learned during my Miami experience? What is important about what I've done? What are the implications of what I've studied for how I'll live my life? In short, it asks students to reflect on what it means to be an intellectual leader and how they plan to use knowledge gained in college to select a career and to contribute to the betterment of society. Two special one-credit seminars--"HON 350: Preparing for Life Beyond Miami" and "HON 480: Honors Thesis Workshop"--are associated with the Senior-Year Honors Living Learning Community.

Related Upper-Class Communities:

Scholar Leader:
Currently located in Stoddard Hall and Elliott Hall (2007-2008)
Many Honors students choose to apply to and live in the Scholar Leader Program
(housed in two of the most historical residence halls in the nation). The Scholar Leader Program fosters a proactive, supportive community dedicated to enhancing leadership and scholarship among its members and the broader University community. Any current Miami student with a cumulative G.P.A. above a 3.0 may apply to the program. Generous Scholar Leader room endowments help fund participants’ room expenses. Find out more here.
