Upper-class Communities:
Scholars
for Service:
Currently
located in Wells Hall (2007-2008)
Once students
complete their first year, they are given
the option of living in another Honors living
learning community that is specially designed
for students in the middle years of their
college experience. The aim of the middle-level
Honors living learning community is to help
students become immersed in their disciplines
and gain awareness of the significance of
their disciplinary study by applying knowledge
to real-world problems and to their own
lives. The Second- and Third-Year Living
Learning Community also focuses on providing
and initiating service projects within the
local community. "HON 281: Introduction
to Community Service & Learning"
is a special two-credit seminar associated
with this community
Scholars
for Change:
Currently
located in Bishop Hall (2007-2008)
Our "capstone"
residence hall, which has traditionally
been Bishop Hall, is purposefully designed
for Honors students completing their years
at Miami. This living learning community
aims to assist students in navigating this
challenging period of transition and to
provide them with tools for synthesizing
and reflecting on their college experience.
It focuses on questions such as: What have
I accomplished and learned during my Miami
experience? What is important about what
I've done? What are the implications of
what I've studied for how I'll live my life?
In short, it asks students to reflect on
what it means to be an intellectual leader
and how they plan to use knowledge gained
in college to select a career and to contribute
to the betterment of society. Two special
one-credit seminars--"HON 350: Preparing
for Life Beyond Miami" and "HON
480: Honors Thesis Workshop"--are associated
with the Senior-Year Honors Living Learning
Community.
