JACQUE RUPERT
'08:
I chose Miami for several different reasons,
namely: the quality of education offered,
the size of the campus, the location of campus,
and the environment that Miami operates in.
I felt as though Miami had the perfect combination
of the qualities I valued in an education.
I wanted a mid-sized, liberal arts education.
I wanted to get exposure to a number of different
subjects and viewpoints. I wanted a campus
focused on a quality undergraduate education.

- Individualized
Plan of Study:
Chart
your own course of study to meet your honors
and general education requirements, while simultaneously
pursuing any of the over 100 majors offered
at Miami. For students in the Honors Program,
their honors requirements fulfill their general
education requirements at Miami. This allows
students the opportunity to tailor their educational
plan to meet their personal goals and the flexibility
to meet their general education requirements
through both in-class and out-of-class experiences.
- Personal
Advising:
Students in the Honors Program participate in
personalized advising sessions where they receive
guidance in the development and revision of
their academic plan; reflect on their goals
and progress; and prepare for life after Miami.
Our academic support team also informs students
of enriched learning opportunities through weekly
e-newsletters and a web site dedicated to current
honors students.
- Honors
Seminars :
These small interactive seminars are meant to
challenge students to their fullest. They feature
professors who care deeply about their research
and classroom instruction. In addition, the seminars
offer the opportunity for students to immediately
apply knowledge to the real world. Honors courses
are usually capped at twenty students, which provides
students more one-on-one attention with the program's
esteemed faculty and staff.
- Community
Service and Leadership Opportunities:
The
Honors Program provides regular opportunities
for students to get involved in community service
and take leadership roles. These opportunities
help students to apply their learning and build their capacity for teamwork, civic engagement,
and self-understanding.
- Priority
Class Registration:
After their first semester, Honors students receive top priority over nearly
all other Miami students during course registration periods. Honors students will register ahead
of seniors, juniors, sophomores, and their fellow
first-year students, allowing them to enroll
in many of the courses they need to complete their educational
plan.
- Honors
Community:
Optional Honors residence halls provide students
with meaningful social and intellectual programming
beyond classroom walls. Contrary to popular
belief, living in the Honors residence halls
is not an indication of "geek-iness."
In fact, the Honors residence halls are historically
the most sought-after on campus. As an Honors
student, you have priority over all non-Honors
students vying for a room in these halls.
- One
Summer of Tuition-Free Classes:
Honors students at Miami are entitled to eight
hours of free summer tuition, after either their
sophomore or junior year, with the Honors Program's
Summer Tuition Waiver. Some students will use
their free tuition to take summer classes in
Oxford. Others will greatly reduce the costs
of Miami-sponsored summer study abroad programs
or international workshops with the waiver. Regardless of how students
choose to apply the tuition waiver, they'll
save upwards of $3,000.
- Support
for Research, Creative and Leadership Projects:
Miami's Honors Program believes that generating
knowledge and coordinating meaningful educational
experiences should not be limited to graduate
students and faculty. That's why the program
will provide students with grants for conducting
or presenting research, completing creative
projects, and coordinating service and leadership endeavors.
- Permanent
Record:
Applying to graduate school? Employer seeking
your college record? Honors graduates from Miami
University receive a notation on their college
transcripts indicating completion of the Honors
Program.
