Teaching & Mentoring

Because we want students to progressively advance their knowledge and understanding, we have divided Honors experiences into three tiers. Moving through these tiers will allow students to gradually gain mastery of critical learning outcomes.

Questions?
For more information on proposing an honors experience contact Dr. Carolyn Haynes, Director, at haynesca@muohio.edu

All faculty, staff or students who would like to offer either an in-class or out-of-class honors experience are invited to submit a proposal to the Honors & Scholars Program Advisory Committee. Those proposals which most clearly demonstrate how the experience will meet the desired learning objectives for the appropriate tier will be given preference for approval.

Steps in the Proposal Process:
  1. Talk to your chair, director or supervisor about the possibility of proposing and offering an honors experience. Decide upon a semester or year to offer it.

  2. Review the information about each tier to consider whether you would like to offer an introductory (Tier 1), intermediate (Tier 2), or advanced (Tier 3) honors experience. Tier 1 experiences typically provide foundational skills and knowledge. Tier 2 help students practice research and inquiry methods, and Tier 3 experiences enable students to define and pursue their own projects.

  3. Consider which type of experience you might wish to offer:
    • Honors seminar that is newly designed for and exclusively enrolls honors students
    • Honors version of a regularly offered course which exclusively enrolls honors students
    • Regularly offered course that enrolls both honors and non-honors students but includes additional expectations for honors students
    • Co-curricular or non-credit-bearing learning experience.

  4. Contact Carolyn Haynes ( haynesca@muohio.edu) in the University Honors Program to discuss the program outcomes and mission and to identify the appropriate proposal form to complete.

  • Courses which are cancelled due to low enrollment will not be compensated.
  • The University Honors Program requests that departments make every effort to enable faculty teaching newly approved honors courses to teach the course at least three times over the span of five years.
Compensation for Honors Experiences:
Compensation for teaching or leading honors experiences varies depending on the type of experience and the educator’s level of involvement in honors professional development opportunities.
-Experiences which ARE COMPENSATED:

Newly developed honors seminars that exclusively enroll honors students and that are three or more credits, the faculty member’s home department will receive unrestricted compensation at $800 a credit hour approximately three weeks after the semester begins.

For existing courses that are modified into dedicated honors seminars (identified by the existing departmental designator and number, followed by an “H”—e.g., HST 111H), the dean of the instructor’s home division will provide support to the instructor’s home department.

-Experiences which ARE NOT COMPENSATED:

Departments are not compensated for existing courses that enroll both honors & non-honors students and include additional expectations for University Honors students wishing to receive honors credit.

Instructors or units that offer non-credit-bearing learning experiences that enroll either only honors students or honors and non-honors students are not compensated.

-Professional Development which IS COMPENSATED:

Educators planning to offer any type of honors experience are invited to participate in:
  1. A two-day Honors Educator Institute. Those who complete the Honors Educator Institute are offered $1000 in professional development funds.
  2. An Honors Educator Learning Community which involves six meetings and follow-up consultations. Those who complete the Honors Educator Learning Community experience are offered $500 in professional development funds.
