RESEARCH FUNDING
One of the most significant rewarding experiences for faculty and students alike is to engage in research. Below are some internal sources of funding for undergraduate research.

 

Undergraduate Research Funds for all Miami Students:

Miami University Interdisciplinary Technology Development Challenge (MUITDC)
This annual contest focuses on a particular topic. Teams of undergraduate students from various majors work together to develop and demonstrate a technology at the laboratory scale, to provide fiscal projections that indicate a financial viability, and to identify policy issues that incorporate esthetic and societal concerns. Submission deadline is in September of each year. First place team receives $5000.

Undergraduate Research Award Program
Students can apply for small, independent research projects. All projects must be sponsored by a faculty member. There are two rounds of applications, one due in mid-September and the other in early February. The awards range from $150 to $1000 and must be expended by June.

Undergraduate Summer Scholars Awards
Enables Miami undergraduates to do 10 weeks of research or other creative activities in the summer under the supervision of faculty and receive 12 credits. Students receive a $26000 summer allowance and $400 for supplies and travel. The faculty sponsor receives $600. Applications due in early December in the department of the faculty sponsor.

Undergraduate Presentation Awards
Offers students up to $200 for presenting at a conference. Applications must be submitted prior to the conference. Submit to the Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship.

DUOS (Doctoral Undergraduate Opportunities for Scholarship)
Enables Miami undergraduates to do research or other creative activities with the guidance of a graduate student mentor. Students may request up to $1,000 per project. Applications may be initiated by either graduates or undergraduates, but the undergraduate student is to have intellectual ownership of the project and the submitted application must be agreed to and signed by both students. Application to the program is open to any Miami University undergraduate student and any post-master's doctoral student in good standing who agree to abide by program requirements. College of Arts & Science Dean’s Scholar Program
Offers the student and the faculty sponsor $750 to engage in a research project; applications usually due in March or April.

Roschman Fund
supports enrichment activities for undergraduate students in the College of Arts & Science. The most common use of the fund is to support student travel to conferences to give presentations. Co-Curricular Learning Grants
Provide assistance for enhanced learning experiences that encourage student interaction with faculty or staff, for example, field trips to special exhibits or seminars. Grants partially offset the expense to student participants, with student participants assuming a share of the program costs. Application forms, which are available at, should be submitted to the Office of Community Engagement and Service at least two weeks prior to the event. Undergraduate Research Funds for University Honors Students:
The University Honors Program Endowed Funds are also available to support student research. Awards range from $100 to $1000, and students may apply at any time. Funding is designed to support undergraduate research, creative projects and other student-initiated service activities. Forms are available on the Honors Program Blackboard site, in the “Forms and Applications” section.

Joanna Jackson Goldman Memorial Prize
Offers a graduating senior, approximately $25,000 to conduct an independently designed project during the year after graduation. Applications due in mid November.

Undergraduate Associates Program
Offers students the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor to assist with the teaching of a course. Students receive a notation on their transcript. Applications are due in the first two weeks of each semester.
