How do I get into the University Honors Program as a current college student?
Current college students, whether at Miami or transferring to Miami from another institution, must apply directly to the University Honors Program in order to be admitted. For your application to be considered, you must have obtained at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA and have completed between 15 and 45 credit hours. Back>>

Will it be difficult to complete University Honors Program requirements, since I didn't start in the Program my first semester at college?
This greatly depends on your major and the amount of Miami Plan and other classes that you have left to take. Some majors allow students less flexibility in their schedules than others. The good news is that we have an Honors & Scholars Advisors, (529-3399), on staff who can talk to you about this issue and help you devise a plan for completing your UHP requirements and graduate on time. If admitted, what do I have to do to stay in the University Honors Program?
To remain in good standing in the UHP, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher during their first and sophomore years, and a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher during their junior and senior years. Students must also make timely progress toward completing Program requirements. This usually means completing a minimum of 2 Honors experiences each year. Back>>

Will I receive any special treatment or recognition as an Honors & Scholars student?
As current students will tell you, there are many advantages to belonging to the University Honors Program. The benefits section will describe many of these. In addition, Honors students have special opportunities to work closely with faculty on research projects or as teaching assistants, meet university speakers and lecturers, participate in the Honors community activities, and assume leadership positions both on- and off-campus. Will being in the University Honors Program isolate me from other non-Honors students?
Honors students take Honors-designated classes. However, these classes do not constitute your full schedule. Over half of your course schedule each semester will be non-Honors classes. You will not be academically isolated from non-Honors students. Although Honors students have the unique option of choosing to live in a residence hall community filled with Honors students, there are numerous other on-campus residence halls from which you may choose. Honors students live in nearly every on campus residence hall community, and participate in a wide range of student organizations. Back>>

Do the students in the Honors & Scholars Program do anything special together?
The Honors & Scholars Program provides its students with a plethora of social, intellectual, and cultural opportunities. This year, Honors Program students have been involved in coffeehouses, debates, community service experiences in Cincinnati, pizza dinners with professors, and other intellectual and social pursuits. Honors students have the option of living in the Honors & Scholars residence hall communities, which offer additional social programming specifically for those residents. Some of these programs include intramural sport teams, an annual coed Thanksgiving football tournament with a rival community on Academic Quad, trips to theatrical productions in Cincinnati, a riverboat formal, and various events created by Honors students (i.e. introduction to tae kwon do, massage therapy, film screenings, and game nights!).

What are the requirements to graduate with University Honors?
Requirements differ depending on the year you entered Miami. For requirements for current Miami students, see Program Requirements. Back>>

How are Honors courses different from other courses? Are they harder?
Honors courses or seminars typically are challenging and innovative and appeal to students from every major. Most courses use active learning approaches over lectures; assign primary source readings and incorporate opportunities for independent research. Generally, Honors courses are not "harder" than other courses. They are just formatted differently. The small class size allows deeper discussion and critical thinking. Typically, the professor serves as coach or facilitator and provides students with regular feedback and assessment. Most faculty encourage students to take intellectual risks, meet with them individually, and involve them in making certain decisions regarding class direction. Back>>

What is an Honors Experience?
Honors Experiences encompass a broad array of learning opportunities. Honors Experiences consist of honors courses as well as other experiences such as study abroad, mocktrial participation, Urban Internship program, and undergraduate associates program. You can visit our Academics page for more detailed information. Back>>

Do I have to do a thesis?
Honors students are strongly encouraged to complete a thesis. A thesis offers a chance to pursue a special interest or passion. Many students choose to do traditional, research-oriented projects while others design individually-tailored projects that better suit their interests and professional goals. For example, many education majors have turned student teaching experiences into their thesis. Other students have designed projects based on overseas study and internship experiences or have created performances and exhibitions, novels and groups of poems. We provide assistance to students developing a thesis, in the form of faculty mentoring, a thesis writing workshop (HON 480), and financial support. Back>>

How many current students are accepted each semester?
This number varies each semester depending on the amount of space available in the program. Contact the Honors office (529-3399) for more information.
