I am Jeff Ruder, Assistant Director for Academic and Co-Curricular Support. I worked in residence life, academic advising, and campus discipline before beginning with the University Honors & Scholars Program. I completed my M.S. in Student Affairs Administration at Indiana University in 2006. I earned my B.A. in History at The University of Texas at Austin, where I was in the UT Liberal Arts Honors program. This means that I have three favorite teams: the Longhorns, the Hoosiers, and the RedHawks.
WHAT I DO IN HONORS:
I work with Business students as well as some Arts and Science students (specifically those in language majors and some humanities majors). I view my primary responsibility to be enriching the academic and co-curricular experiences of Honors students. That means working together with students to develop plans that meet all of their requirements and ensure they make the most of their classes and other experiences. Students have more freedom than they realize when planning their course of study at Miami – it’s my job to help them take advantage of that freedom.
MY BEST ADVICE:
It’s important for all first-year students to start the first semester strong. Don’t wait to develop a schedule of class time, study time, and free time – start doing so during the first week of class. Students are more productive when they have a regular schedule that involves study time during the day. Plus, ensuring that you study regularly during the day frees up time in the evening for clubs, intramural sports, and so on. .
BY THE TIME YOU GRADUATE:
By the time students graduate from Miami, I hope they develop a strong internal belief system and a sense of self. This belief system should be guided by good evidence, but should not be imposed by external authorities.
