This Week in H&S Archive

From Kari Taylor (01/08/2008)
Having enjoyed some time off during the holiday season, the Honors & Scholars staff is now looking ahead to Spring 2008. From planning service-oriented spring break trips to checking each student’s progress toward fulfilling the H&S requirements, we are working to take stock of where we are and determine where we want to go during the upcoming 16 weeks. >>

From Ryan Yates (08/29/2007)
The Honors Program has given me benefits that will long outlast the scholarship I received when I entered Miami four years ago. It has provided me a depth of thought and an education of the highest quality, friendships and memories that will last until my dying day, and experiences that will affect and shape me for years to come.>>

Drew Dorner (06/04/2007)
Looking back on it all, almost every experience I have had in college has been shaped in-part by the Honors program. The program has permeated into countless facets of life here at Miami University in an effort to enhance the educational experiences of its members. While Miami provides a wonderful collegiate career for all its students, the Honors program simply makes it all-the-more special. >>

Stephanie Spoelstra (04/02/2007)
As usual, this week has been packed with negotiating academic studies, work in the Honors and Scholars Program office and the College of Arts and Science, and fun with my friends as the weather turns beautiful. Especially this week, however, I have had the chance to attend some amazing programs offered within the Honors and Scholars community and campus-wide. >>

Dr. Hays Cummins (03/27/2007)
This spring break, I led a group of about 15 Harrison Scholars to Costa Rica. I have been teaching in Costa Rica for almost 20 years and it is one of my favorite places to visit. I'm an interdisciplinary ecologist and Costa Rica is the perfect place to experience hands-on a look at the amazing biodiversity in the tropics, the impacts of human activity on natural systems, and the chance for our group to experience Costa Rica culture. On this trip, Dr. Mark Boardman, Director of the Institute of Environmental Sciences, accompanied us. >>

March 22nd will mark the end of our Honors & Scholars, fall ’07 incoming student review. On the 22nd, we will be mailing out our notifications, thus wrapping up what has been an amazingly competitive review year. >>

Dr. Carolyn Haynes (03/02/2007)
This week is a gratifying one for me.  We are in the final stages of completing our final round of admissions to the University Honors and University Scholars Programs for next year. >>

Debra Stanley (10/18/2006)
Make-A-Difference Day . . . . a nationally-designated day where people help others by doing volunteer work in the community. While most of us don’t need a special day to do community service, MADD is a wonderful opportunity for community members to work together to benefit people and organizations in their own neighborhoods. >>

Dr. John Forren (09/11/2006)
As we approach the middle of September, Miamians are still just settling into the routines and rhythms of the new academic year. Many first years are still adjusting to life away from home. Returning students are fine-tuning their social calendars and academic plans. Faculty and staff are learning about new students, classes and colleagues. At the same time, we are all still getting to know our new President, our new campus buildings and (not to be overlooked) our wonderful new campus parking options! >>

Kristy Burton (08/28/2006)
This week in Honors & Scholars has rushed by with blazing speed and my memory of it is just a blur of meetings, classes, questions, and info sessions. This is my seventh year at Miami, so I am not a stranger to the chaos, confusion, and excitement of the first week of classes. It kind of sweeps you up into this whirlwind and then deposits you back into your normal position a couple of weeks later when everyone has established their routines, set their schedules, and filled out the appropriate paperwork. >>

Dr. Carolyn Haynes (08/14/2006)
Signs of the new academic year have definitely emerged. The driveway next to Bishop hall is currently being repaved. Tappan, Emerson, Wells and Bishop Halls are undergoing their final cleaning, and the Honors & Scholars Program office is buzzing with activity. >>
