Jolene
Smith is the Executive Director and co-founder
Free the Slaves, a non-profit, non-partisan
organization dedicated to eradicating modern
slavery around the world. Free the Slaves
conducts social science-based research,
supports grassroots anti-slavery organizations,
helps businesses eliminate slave-made goods
from their supply chains, educates the public
about the existence of slavery and encourages
governments to enforce anti-slavery laws.
Free the Slaves is based in Washington,
DC and has staff members in California,
Mississippi, Wisconsin and Delhi, India.
In just four years,
Free the Slaves has grown to a staff of
twelve and works in Ghana, Haiti, India,
Nepal and Sudan, in addition to its work
in the United States.
Before launching Free the
Slaves, Ms. Smith worked at the Center
for International Policy and the Center
of Concern in Washington, DC, the Kroc
Institute for International Peace in South
Bend, IN and has volunteered for various
development organizations in rural Ecuador.
She also worked as a management and systems
analyst for Andersen Consulting.
Ms. Smith has spoken
out against modern slavery at venues throughout
the United States, and has been featured
by various print, TV and radio outlets
in the US and abroad. She has also lectured
at American University, Queens College,
Elon University and Trinity College.
